Indians

Everyone was cranky this afternoon.
And what cures crankiness better than almost anything on a hot "boring" afternoon?
Why a 4-wheeler ride to the creek, of course.
Kate fell in the water just at this moment. Luckily she came up laughing.
We pretended we were Indians.  I'm not really sure that we did stuff that Indians do, but luckily no one was around to know any different.

We gave each other names that were, well, maybe Indian-ish and we answered to them for a chunk of the afternoon.

C :  Honey Meadow
S : Big Creek
K : Prairie Flower
E : Little River
J : Little Hoohaw

Letter K with sticks.
We made headdresses.  Well, sort of.  And we went barefoot (most of us were like that already anyway.  I chose to make moccasins out of deer hide (aka keep my shoes on)).

Little River has sharp pointy teeth for eating hard things.
Little Hoohaw just said no to Indian headdresses.

Big Creek made us a fire so we could cook the deer meat that our father was hunting for.  Then he killed a rabbit with his bow and arrow.  He is so brave and skilled.  Little River carried the dead rabbit to the fire.

Then Prairie Flower slashed her foot on a rock, and, much to the dismay of everyone, we were sent back to reality.  Slashes must be addressed.  Especially considering the ground material of the area that we were playing in.
We picked apples and visited Jackie really quickly before heading back home to clean the flesh wound.
 Jackie enjoyed the apple cores.
We (temporarily) forgot about the wound.

It took us a good hour and a half before getting/remembering to get that slash on her foot taken care of.
But it's done, it's fine, it's bandaged.
Me and the head tops.  (This was supposed to be a group shot.  Nice, eh?)

crossing the ditch for more apples

So, the cranks disappeared (at least until bedtime) and we now have a new game: Indians.

Hoohaw (or Huha) is the name Briggs has given to all birds.

What a great play time. Jackie's name could be "Running Pony"

What a fun game! All your kids are the perfect age for that adventurous kind of imagining. Enjoy it now and play it lots, because when they get to Kyle's age, that kind of stuff doesn't appeal to them as much. If I told Kyle we were going to play Indians, he would look at me funny and say "Mom, do I have to?"
He doesn't even want to dress up for Halloween this year....isn't that sad? I don't want him (or any of my kiddos) to grow up, it's too fast!
