out in the field

There was a little bull calf that was abandoned out in the field amongst all of the other cows and calves. Weston asked us to go get a bottle for him because he had no idea how long the calf had been without nourishment. So the littlins and I went home and heated up some of Cookie's milk on the stove, put it in a bottle and went back out to give it to the little fellar.

But he didn't want it. And it was pretty tricky trying to give a bottle to a calf that didn't want it, while holding a 10-month-old who really did want it. The calf kept trying to get away and was bellowing for his mother. "Maaaa". It was sad. Then he ran up to a black cow thinking that was his Maaa, but she kicked him. So super sad. Sometimes I just can't take it - hearing that cry from little neglected calves. I mean, who do these Mama cows think they are? Leaving their helpless little babe all alone. What else do they have to do? Ruminate?

I passed Jiles off to Kate and tried again, real gentle like. And he finally did drink some.

Little fellar's all mothered up now {meaning he has a mother...even if it isn't his birth mother, which I'm not sure if it is or not}, so he's all right.
